Retaining Walls NZ

New Zealand's terrain demands engineered retaining solutions. NZ Concrete Group designs and builds retaining walls for commercial developments, subdivisions, roading projects, and civil infrastructure across the country.

Engineered Retaining Solutions

Retaining walls are structural elements that hold back earth and manage ground levels. In New Zealand's hilly terrain, they are essential for creating usable building platforms, stabilising hillside sites, managing road cuttings, and preventing slope failure. Every retaining wall we build is engineered by a chartered structural or geotechnical engineer and consented through the relevant territorial authority.

We build retaining walls from 1.5 metres to over 10 metres in retained height — from small commercial site boundaries to major civil infrastructure projects. Our team handles excavation, formwork, reinforcing, concrete placement, drainage, and backfill as a complete package.

Retaining Wall Types

The right wall type depends on retained height, soil conditions, surcharge loads, site access, and budget. We build all major types of engineered retaining walls.

Cantilever Retaining Walls

The most common type for commercial construction. An L-shaped reinforced concrete wall that uses the weight of the retained soil on its heel to resist overturning. Economical for heights up to about 6 metres.

Gravity Retaining Walls

Mass concrete or crib-block walls that resist earth pressure through their own weight. Suitable for moderate heights and situations where a simpler construction method is preferred.

MSE Walls

Mechanically Stabilised Earth walls use geogrid reinforcement within compacted fill to create a stable earth structure. Cost-effective for tall walls and commonly used in roading and civil infrastructure.

Anchored & Tied-Back Walls

Walls restrained by ground anchors drilled into the retained soil or rock. Used where site constraints prevent a conventional footing, such as retaining walls built on or near property boundaries.

Common Applications

Commercial Developments

Creating level building platforms on sloping sites, managing car park levels, and establishing site boundaries for commercial buildings.

Subdivisions

Boundary retaining walls, access road cuttings, and stormwater management structures for residential and commercial subdivisions.

Civil Infrastructure

Road cuttings, bridge abutments, rail embankments, and flood protection structures for council and government infrastructure projects.

Engineering & Drainage

Every retaining wall over 1.5 metres retained height requires specific engineering design and building consent. We work with experienced structural and geotechnical engineers to ensure each wall is designed for the actual site conditions — including soil type, groundwater levels, surcharge loads, and seismic demands. Proper drainage behind the wall is critical to long-term performance, and we install comprehensive drainage systems as part of every retaining wall project.
